SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Bagwell Lumber has broken ground for the construction of its new storage facility on North Central Avenue in Avon Park. It’s expected to be completed within six to eight months, construction crews are currently working on the foundation.

The new structure is adjacent to Bagwell Lumber’s Avon Park facility on a 0.95-acre site near the Avon Park Depot Museum. It’s around 12,000 square feet and will provide more room as well as organization for the lumber company.

“It’ll be mostly for storage, I don’t know what it will become,” President of Bagwell Lumber Co. Gary Bagwell said. “It might become more. We’ll see what happens from that point on. I’m a slow growth type of guy.”

Bagwell said it was more detailed than anticipated as the structure is near the railroad tracks that requires a stronger foundation than normal, ensuring safety and construction standards. He continued that initially the new facility will store mostly doors and windows in an environment that’ll keep them dry.

“It’s been coming on for years, I just want to get more organized and a little more efficient in what we do,” Bagwell said. “You will get a lot of semis in here, and it’ll make it a little easier for them to get in and out for distribution and all.”

Construction broke ground in mid-June and the new facility is being built on 82 N. Central Ave.

Bagwell Lumber Co., located at 309 W. Pleasant St., has been in business for 67 years providing building materials for the area. Tommy Bagwell opened the Avon Park lumber yard in August of 1957. Three generations later Gary Bagwell now helms the operation working side by side with his son Dusty (fourth generation) to continue one of the area’s oldest family businesses.
