Resolute Temporarily Halted Operations at Quebec Sawmill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Resolute Forest Products announced that it has temporarily suspended operations at its sawmill in Saint-Thomas, Didyme, Quebec. The operations will remain suspended until 11th June, 2023.

The media report noted that the temporary suspension of operations will not have any impact on workers. Although the action will affect nearly 15 employees, the impact will not be serious as they will be given other responsibilities at site or will be moved to Resolute’s other facilities. These redeployments are likely to cause additional expenditure to the company. The downtime will be used to carryout maintenance works at the facility.

As per analysts, the demand for lumber in North America is expected to decline by 7% in 2023. However, this dip in demand is unlikely to lead to corresponding decline in prices, aided by tight availability of lumber supply in key producing regions including British Columbia and the U.S. West Coast. The reduced capacity at sawmills coupled with closing down of certain sawmills will impact supply. The potential recession fears could further dampen lumber demand.
