Reliance to Double PET Bottle Recycling Capacity

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has pledged to double its recycling capacity. It plans two-fold surge in PET bottle recycling capacity to 5 billion bottles per year, which in turn would further strengthen its leadership position in PET recycling. It must be noted that the Mukesh Ambani-led group is one of the largest plastics producers in the country, accounting for almost 50% of the country’s total plastic production.

As per estimates, RIL currently recycles approximately 2 million PET bottles every year at its plants in Barabanki, Hoshiarpur and Nagothane. The company had recently set up a recycled polyester staple fiber (PSF) manufacturing facility in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. To boost the recycling capacity further, RIL has announced the launch of a new PET plant in Dahej, which will have a processing capacity of nearly 1 million metric tonne per annum. The plant is expected to be completed in 2026.

In the recently held annual general meeting of the company, Mukesh Ambani said that the company has developed techniques to produce biodegradable and compostable plastics, which will completely replace single-use plastics. The company is exploring greener ways to manage its energy needs, he added.
