Refined Lead Metal Demand Exceeded Supply by 169 kt

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The January 2018 edition of the monthly ‘Lead and Zinc Statistics Bulletin’ published by the International Lead and Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) has provided the preliminary data for world lead supply and demand for the opening eleven months of 2017. The ILZSG points out that world lead market ended in a deficit during the above-mentioned period.

According to provisional data released by ILZSG, world lead metal demand exceeded supply, thereby pushing the market to a deficit of 169,000 tonnes during the initial eleven-month period of the current year. Over this period, the total reported lead stock levels declined modestly by 33,000 tonnes.

The global lead mine production edged higher by 3% over the first eleven months of 2017, as compared against the production during the corresponding period in 2016. The jump in production was mainly led by China and India. Kazakhstan too reported notable jump in mine output. However, the production increases by these countries were partially offset by sharp decline in other countries of the world including Australia, Sweden and the US. The lead mine output by the world totaled 4.486 million tonnes during Jan-Nov ’17, when matched with 4.357 million tonnes during the similar eleven-month period in 2016.

The refined lead metal production during Jan-Nov ’17 totaled 10.580 million tonnes, higher by nearly 3.1% when compared with the output of 10.264 million tonnes during corresponding period in 2016. The refined lead metal production reported significant jump in China. The year-on-year jump in refined metal output was also on account of increased production from other countries including India. On the other hand, the US refined lead metal output dropped sharply during this period.

The global usage of refined lead metal has increased by 4.9% to 10.749 million tonnes during January to November last year. The apparent usage surged higher in China, the Republic of Korea and the US. The jump in usage by Germany and the UK lifted the refined lead metal usage by the European region.

The Chinese imports of lead contained in lead concentrates totaled 643,000 tonnes, dropping sharply by nearly 8% over the previous year. The net imports of refined lead metal by the country amounted to 77,000 tonnes.

The ILZSG preliminary data indicates that monthly global lead mine output totaled 408.8 kt during the month of November 2017. The global refined lead metal production totaled 978.7 kt, whereas global lead metal usage totaled 963.1 kt during the month.
