The Polyrock concrete technology uses soft plastic packaging recovered via the customer REDcycle collection program at Coles supermarkets.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Melbourne, Australia-headquartered supermarket, retail and consumer services chain Coles announced a new recycling technology, aimed at giving new life to millions of soft plastics. The innovative technology has been developed in collaboration with RMIT University, with the assistance of recycling firms RED Group and Replas.
The Polyrock concrete technology uses soft plastic packaging recovered via the customer REDcycle collection program at Coles supermarkets. The process will recycle these materials to produce sustainable alternative to aggregate minerals that are used in concrete. The partnership aims to recycle over 6.5 million pieces of soft plastics through the program, by diverting them from landfills. The Clean Up Australia estimates indicate that only around one-tenth of the 3.5 million tonnes of discarded soft plastics in Australia are recycled every year.
