Nestle Declares New Partnership to Boost Soft Plastics Recycling

The partnership aims to explore the opportunities of turning soft plastic from waste into a resource.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nestle has entered into a new partnership with Australian recycler iQ Renew to launch a trial program on collection and recycling of soft plastics from over 100,000 homes.

The partnership aims to explore the opportunities of turning soft plastic from waste into a resource. The pilot of the program will cover 2,000 Australian households, which will be later expanded to 100,000 houses. It aims to process nearly 750 tonnes of soft plastics that would otherwise end up in landfills.

According to estimates, soft plastics account for nearly one-fifth of the volume of Australian household landfill bins. Also, many residents are found dropping them in recycling bins, due to lack of proper awareness. This creates problems, as most material recovery facilities (MRFs) are not equipped to separate soft plastics from other household recycling items. It is under these circumstances that Nestle has decided to join hands with iQ Renew to establish a robust collection system for soft plastics.

Nestlé Australia CEO Sandra Martinez noted that soft plastics are an area that needs greater focus and collaboration. The trial could unlock the significant potential for soft plastic packaging to become a resource, he added.
