The next round of negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty is scheduled to be held August 5 to 14, 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Greenpeace International has demanded a significant reduction in plastic manufacture in a newly published report. It was discovered that the manufacture of petrochemicals linked to plastic puts more than 50 million people in 11 nations at risk of exposure to dangerous air pollution.

The plastics epidemic has become a public health emergency, the report cautioned. The Global Plastics Treaty calls for a 75% reduction in plastic manufacturing by 2040 in order to lessen the growing risks to the health of people and the earth. It stated that if the issue is not effectively addressed at its root, the crisis will only worsen.

According to a Greenpeace research, during the feedstock production process, petrochemical facilities release a variety of hazardous airborne chemicals, including as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and volatile organic compounds. Higher quantities of these pollutants have been found in the vicinity of petrochemical operations in a number of investigations.

According to the report, the U.S. has the highest number of people living at a distance that is linked to elevated risk—13 million, especially in Texas and Louisiana.

According to studies, the industry intends to increase plastic output worldwide through 2050, which will exacerbate the situation.

The next round of negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty is scheduled to be held August 5 to 14, 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.
