Nucor to Add New Line at Kentucky Steel Plate Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation announced its decision to add a new blast and prime line at its greenfield state-of-the-art steel plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky, which is being constructed at an investment of approximately $1.35 billion. The mill was originally scheduled to have a production capacity of around 1.2 million tonnes of steel plate products per annum.

According to the company press release, the newly announced blast and prime line is expected to have an annual capacity of nearly 120,000 tons. It will provide the company with enhanced capabilities and boost its offerings for its customers of wider and thicker steel plate products.

The Brandenburg steel plate mill is scheduled to start operations during the fourth quarter next year. When fully operational, it will employ approximately 400 people. The uncertain steel market conditions in between had forced the company to delay its investment. The new mill will be capable of producing 97% of the domestically consumed plate products, the company claimed.

Johnny Jacobs, Vice President & General Manager of Nucor Steel Brandenburg said that the addition of a blast and prime line will help it to better serve customers in key markets, including our Nation's military, infrastructure, heavy equipment, offshore wind and other energy products.
