It must be noted that the court-appointed insolvency monitor had revealed the discovery of new bottom sludge in its report filed to the B.C. administration during the month of October this year.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Northern Pulp announced that the layer of sludge at Boat Harbour has resulted in unprecedented delay to its cleanup effort at its effluent treatment facility in Pictou County. It must be noted that an independent assessment at the pulp mill had detected 194,000 cubic metres of sludge at the bottom of the basin.
In a recent press release, the company stated that the original fall 2020 cleanup plan for the aeration stabilization basin (ASB) has now been delayed by the discovery and additional sampling works. The cleanup plans is now expected to commence in spring 2021, it said. The sediment assessment carried out recently has been different from the one done earlier in 1997. The provincial government should be responsible for removal of any sludge that might have existed prior to Northern Pulp’s takeover of the mill, it added.

The company cited that the discrepancy in the amount of sediment as identified in the two surveys calls for further investigation before going ahead with decommissioning activities. Experts need to be consulted to determine the content of the sediment and more study needs to be undertaken.
