Northern Pulp Commits to Modernization of Proposed ETF at NS Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Northern Pulp has reiterated its commitment to continue its Nova Scotia paper mill operations. The company declared that it intends to continue operating in the region in an environmentally sustainable manner, thereby contributing to the region’s forestry sector.

The company has urged Nova Scotia Environment to issue a timely, well-defined and outcome-based Environmental Assessment Plan towards modernization of the proposed Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF). Graham Kissack, Vice President of Environment, Health & Safety and Communications, Paper Excellence Canada highlighted this as the first step in the process that could ensure continued operation of the mill.

Kissack stated that the company’s sole focus is on the modernized ETF, which will deliver significant improvements to the existing mill operations. The restart of the mill would preserve over 300 direct jobs in Pictou County and over 2,500 forestry sector jobs across the province, he added.

The new requests made by the company include an 18-24 month timeline, clearly stated set of guidelines and appointment of an independent panel comprising of experienced individuals to review the new process.

Northern Pulp Mill had earlier declared that it is gearing up for planned indefinite closure.
