Nigeria Targets Substantial Boost in E-Waste Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Nigerian administration announced plans to boost e-waste recycling in the country. It has invited free applications from interested parties for setting up additional e-waste collection centres across the country. This was disclosed by Mrs. Ibukun Faluyi, Executive Secretary, E-Waste Producer Responsibility Organisation of Nigeria (EPRON) during the recently held 2020 ITREALMS e-Waste Dialogue.

The plan is to establish a total of 30 e-waste recycling collection centres. Each collection centre will have at least three staff to run its operations. Thus, the project is expected to create nearly 90 new jobs. By keeping zero application fees, the government encourages more locals to be part of the project.

As part of efforts to reduce environmental impacts caused by informal e-waste recycling, the federal government has announced plans to collect 200,000 tonnes of e-waste in the country. The authorities announced that regulators will keep a strict watch on the recycling process employed by various players, in order to ensure that they practise safe and sound disposal techniques to treat end-of-life electronics, which are said to contain hazardous materials harmful for human life and environment. By doing so, the government aims to guarantee a cleaner environment for its citizens.
