Egypt Ponders New Investment to Boost E-Waste Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Egyptian government has announced several plans to boost investment in e-waste recycling projects in the country. This has been made possible with the increased co-operation between the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

The ministries noted that majority of the electronic waste collected by the country’s garbage and waste collectors were usually sold to second-hand products dealers in major malls. They are currently working on a project to introduce an electronic application to monitor collection and safe treatment of discarded electronic waste, by offering discount vouchers, which in turn could be redeemed during purchase of new electronic equipment.

Commenting on the country’s e-waste handling capacity, the ministries noted that Egypt now has 7 e-waste recycling factories in operation. In addition, another five have already been licensed. These facilities will provide a healthy waste management system and reduce environmental pollution.

The Ministry of Communications has already set up an electronic tracking system to locate illegal garbage disposal. The government also plans to create awareness among citizens about the dangers resulting from mishandling of environmental waste.
