SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nigeria generates nearly 1.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, said Barr. Mohammed Abdullahi, the country’s Minister of Environment. For a county with total population of about 200 million people, this is a tremendous volume. Also, the country recycles only about one-tenth of the total plastic waste generated, the Minister said.
The Minister was addressing an event held to unveil the Gap Analysis report on plastics industry.
The lack of waste management infrastructure, inadequate awareness among general public, indiscriminate dumping and burning of plastic waste as well as poor behavioural attitude are being cited as the main drivers of rising plastic pollution in the country. The lack of public and private funding has stalled the growth of infrastructure for waste management.
The Minister appreciated the efforts of the Technical Assistance project, being implemented with the support from the French government. He hoped that the project will help the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable development in the country. The Gap Analysis report will serve as a useful handbook for all participants of the Solid Waste Management sector, he hoped.
