SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has suspended the extended producer responsibility (EPR) authorization for several products, thereby impacting imports by various leading technology companies including Apple, Samsung, HP and Canon. The imports by the companies have been barred, on account of these companies missing the e-waste collection targets as mandated by the EPR. The import suspension order is being issued on the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
In accordance with the online notification posted on CPCB website the EPR authorization of the following companies are suspended with immediate effect-Motorola Mobility India Pvt Ltd, Apple India Pvt Ltd, Canon India Pvt Ltd, Eltech Appliances Pvt Ltd, ETA General Pvt Ltd, HP India Sales Pvt Ltd, Samsung Electronics Pvt Ltd, Vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd, BE Office Automation Products Pvt Ltd and Tara Consultants Pvt Ltd.
According to CPCB officials, the above listed companies will have to pay a penalty of up to INR 1 lakh and submit application for fresh authorization. The provisions of the rules suggest six months rigorous imprisonment for company representatives. In addition, CPCB could stop companies from selling their product in market until re-issuance of the authorization.
The e-waste management rule stipulates collection rate of 30% of e-waste generated during the initial two years of implementation of the rule by companies. This quantity will be further increased afterwards.
