Newmont Declared Restart of Cerro Negro Gold Mine Operations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Newmont announced that it has resumed operations at its Cerro Negro mine in Santa Cruz region of Argentina. The restart follows a six-week suspension of operations at the mine following the death of two workers belonging to the company’s technical services team.

The statement released by the company stated that the governmental authorities have already reviewed the return-to-operations plan submitted by it. The approval is a testimony of the company’s commitment to excellence in operations and security of its premises, said Marcelo Campos, general mine manager, Newmont.

The services chamber Capromisa had raised serious concerns about the impacts of a prolonged suspension on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and service providers. They had demanded expedition of investigations into the deaths and speed up the administrative processes to resume operations at the mine.

According to sources, the Cerro Negro complex has three high-grade underground operating mines- Eureka, Mariana Central and Mariana Norte. In addition, it also holds two underground deposits- Emilia and San Marcos, which are currently under development. This is in addition to five other deposits which are in the final stages of evaluation.
