New 'Right to Repair' Rules Aims to Reduce Europe's Electronic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European Commission unveiled plans for new ‘right to repair’ rules that will cover phones, tablets and laptops by 2021. It had introduced the same for household appliances like television and washing machines last year. This is considered part of the EU’s circular economy action plan of carbon neutrality by 2050.

By introducing new rules for additional electronic gadgets, EU targets sustainable design for these products, which will make them more durable, reusable and upgradeable. Also, the manufacturers will be rewarded for use of more recycled materials. The move aims to restrict single-use products.

According to the action plan, the EU consumer law will undergo revision in order to ensure that consumers are provided with trustworthy and relevant information on products at the point of sale, including their estimated lifespan. The consumers will also be educated on the availability of spare parts and repair services.

The legislation will need approval by EU member states and the European Parliament before it can become law.

Earlier this year, EU had urged to pass a legislation that requires all smart phone manufacturers to adopt a shared charging cable standard.

As per estimates, the EU region generates approximately 12.3 million tonnes of electronic waste every year.
