SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): TOMRA announced that its Board of Directors has approved an investment of EUR 50-60 million to build a modern plastic sorting facility for post-consumer plastic material in Germany.
The mid-scale plant will have an annual processing capacity of 80,000 tons. It will be built in an existing facility which will be rented on a long-term basis. Majority of planned capital investment will be towards purchase of necessary machinery and equipment. The facility is scheduled to become operational between 2024 and 2025.

The facility will source pre-sorted mixed post-consumer plastic material, which would otherwise end up in landfills or incinerators. The input materials will be upgraded at the facility by using a proprietary splitting and grading process. The output from the process will comprise of over 10 different polymer fractions, which will be sold to recyclers, who in turn will use them in mechanical and chemical recycling processes.
Dr. Volker Rehrmann, EVP of TOMRA Recycling noted that the facility will play a key role in contributing to closing the circularity gap for plastics and transforming mixed plastic waste into valuable feedstock for recyclers. Incidentally, the demand for recycled plastics from chemical and mechanical recyclers has been on the rise during recent years.
