Metsa Group Began Operations at 3D Fibre Demo Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The press release by Metsa Group indicates that it has begun operations at the 3D fibre products demo plant located in the integrated mill site in Aenekoski, which in built in collaboration with Valmet. It must be noted that Metsa Spring and Valmet had committed to make an investment of approximately 20 million euros in the plant at the end of 2020.

The plant produces 3D fibre packaging products directly from wet pulp, eliminating intermediate phases. The moulded fibre-based packaging produced at the plant is capable of replacing plastic in food packaging.

As of now, the demo plant will go through a testing and development phase, which is expected to extend to few years. This phase will test the competitiveness of the production and of the product in the packaging market. Upon successful completion of the phase, the company will build a larger production unit.

The facility uses a highly automated production process to produce products with layered structure, in a raw material and energy efficient manner. The layered structure of the products allows it to be easily modified for different purposes, said Jarkko Tuominen, Metsa Group’s project lead. The products are renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, he added.
