Upstate Shredding Facilities Commit $15M Investment

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Upstate Shredding has committed $15 million investments towards environmental upgrades at its recycling facilities. This follows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates in connection with capturing of byproducts from metal shredders and recyclers.

Earlier in July, the company had reached a settlement of $400,000 with the EPA on charges of pollution from its facility. As part of the settlement, it had agreed to invest in modern machinery with the aim of reducing emissions. The EPA had issued an alert memo citing more than 250 metal recycling facilities across the country that violated the Clean Air Act, Upstate Shredding being one among them.

The metal recycler has commenced works on new environmental retention ponds at the Owego shredding plant. This will be followed by a series of enhancement projects which will deliver significant improvement to air and water quality over the next two years. The proposed investment of more than $7 million towards facility and equipment upgrades is expected to help the facility meet the state emission requirements.

The company plans to install new air and water-scrubbing equipment at its Owego, New York, and New Castle, Pennsylvania shredders.
