SSAB, Greenbrier, Alter Partner on Circular Steel Recycling Project

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): SSAB Americas, The Greenbrier Companies, and Alter Trading have partnered to launch a cutting-edge closed-loop steel recycling initiative in the U.S. The partnership demonstrates how recycled materials are transformed into near-zero emissions steel, which are returned to the manufacturing supply chain.
The origin of the project is at SSAB’s Montpelier, Iowa, steelmaking operations, where recycled metals and fossil-free energy is used to produce SSAB Zero steel. This steel, manufactured with near-zero fossil carbon emissions, is being used by Greenbrier to build gondola railcars for Alter Trading.
Under the initiative, steel coils produced by SSAB are transported to its cut-to-length facility in St. Paul before being shipped to Greenbrier for fabrication into railcars. The gondolas, scheduled to be delivered later this year, will be used by Alter to transport recycled metals back to SSAB’s Iowa facility.
According to SSAB Americas President Tom Cox, the project demonstrates the performance of near-zero emissions steel in demanding industrial applications. At the same time, it highlights the benefits of a circular economy, he added.
