SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Tasmania has approved the construction of a new metal recycling facility in Rocherlea, Launceston that will process up to 25,000 tonnes per annum.
Sims Metal will construct and operate the metal recycling facility which will source materials from a variety of public, municipal, and manufacturing sources. Materials will be cut, baled, and boxed on site for shipment to the mainland for further processing.
The delegate of the EPA board determined that the proposed facility can be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner, with conditions imposed around waste management, water quality, and fire management.
These include restrictions on permitted wastes accepted at the facility and waste screening protocols, restriction of hot works areas and imposing stockpile dimension and separation distance requirements.

The application was assessed in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Principles defined in Section 74 of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994. Public consultation was open for 28 days from 30 April 2025. No representations were made.
