SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Aurubis AG has officially announced the launch of a state-of-the-art recycling facility at its Hamburg site at an investment of around €190 million. This marks a major milestone in Europe's efforts to strengthen its critical raw materials supply.
The new Complex Recycling Hamburg (CRH) facility combines several smelting technologies into a single production unit, allowing copper-, lead-, and sulfur-bearing materials to be processed together. The plant will have better capacity to recover valuable metals from complex recycling materials in a more efficient manner.
The facility will have the capacity to process more than 30,000 additional tonnes of recycling materials annually, along with larger volumes of high-value smelter intermediates. The plant also features advanced automation and environmental protection systems.
The inauguration ceremony was attended, among others, by Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Rouenhoff, Hamburg State Councilor Dr. Christopher Schwieger, and Aurubis Chief Operating Officer Tim Kurth. It took almost two and a half years to construct the plant.
This is a key part of the company’s previously announced "Aurubis Performance 2030" growth strategy. It will strengthen its position in the global non-ferrous metals industry. Incidentally, demand for critical metals such as copper is projected to rise further, making advanced recycling increasingly important.
