SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The African nation of Bali has launched a new sustainable management initiative that calls for projects aimed at boosting plastic bottles. The new initiative is aimed at creating a circular economy around plastic waste.
The initiative called “R’Plast” invites projects that focus on innovative recycling techniques to deal with plastic bottle waste in the country, that otherwise ends up in landfills, thereby causing environmental pollution.
The competition is open to anyone in Mali and the rest of the world. The projects need to be posted in www.rplast.org website, on or before April 20, 2020. The ten best projects will be shortlisted on 15th June, 2020. The projects will then be reviewed by a team of waste treatment experts from Mali and European region, in order to adjudge the best three out of the ten.
The winning project will receive a funding of nearly 15,000 euros, whereas the winners of second and third prizes will be awarded funding of nearly 8,000 euros and 4,000 euros respectively.
The competition is organized by the Malian Branch of Junior Chamber International (JCI).
According to Ibrahim Sissoko, Vice-president of the JCI-Bamako Elite, plastic waste threatens the environment and the health of Malians. The country should exercise control over production and use of plastics, he added.
