Kenya Announced Fresh E-Waste Management Initiative

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Kajiado County in Kenya announced launch of a new e-waste management drive, in partnership with Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Centre (WEE) and the Nairobi-headquartered e-waste recycling service provider Taka Taka Solutions.

The new drive intends to create awareness and provide training to people so as to put an end to the culture of throwing away discarded electronic devices. It aims to teach people how to dispose waste properly by effectively sorting and separating the waste at the source itself. By doing so, the world could be made a better place even for future generations, noted Ednah Lenku, Kenya’s Ambassador for Environment.

The drive mainly targets obsolete electronics at households, including computers, refrigerators, washing machines, batteries etc. It encourages youth and women to collect electronic waste from households and deposit them at designated hubs, for which they will earn redeemable bonga points or cashback. The e-waste collected at hubs will be recycled in an environment-friendly manner. A total of 450 teams have already been mobilized within the country towards collection of electronic waste.

According to estimates, Kenya generates around 51,000 tonnes of e-waste per annum, out of which only around 1% are collected for safe recycling.
