SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hydro announced its decision to invest in a state-of-the-art scrap sorting facility at its Wrexham recycling plant in the UK. The proposed NOK 180 million will build a plant that will have capacity to source and sort over 30,000 tonnes of aluminum scrap every year.
The sorting facility will be located next to the extrusion ingot recycling plant and is expected to provide 16 new jobs in the region. The facility will make use of Hydro’s state-of-the-art HySort technology, which will boost the recycling capacity and sorting accuracy. Moreover, the use of post-consumer aluminum scrap will lead to significant reduction in carbon footprints, said the company press release.
The construction of the facility is expected to commence in autumn this year, with the plant likely to become operational by early-2026.
Commenting on the development, Barry Salisbury, Hydro’s plant manager in Wrexham noted that the new facility will enable the company to optimally sort a large variety of post-consumer scrap grades that are currently mainly exported out of the UK. It will help Hydro to meet the increasing demand for low-carbon aluminium, mainly from automotive, transport, and building and construction industries, Salisbury added.
