SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hydro announced major investment of NOK 100 million in state-of-the-art recycling technology at its casthouse at the Ardal primary aluminum plant in Norway. This is part of efforts by the company to meet the rising demand for low-carbon aluminum in Europe.
The formal opening ceremony held at the plant premises on 10tth April, 2024 was attended among others by Christian Sonstlien, Mayor of Ardal; Jan Christian Vestre, Minister of Trade and Industry and Anveig Bjordal Halkjelsvik, Plant Manager.

According to company press release, the upgraded casting line will have the capability to mix primary aluminium made with renewable hydropower with up to 30 percent post-consumer aluminium scrap. The innovative technology will deliver a record low-carbon footprint, thereby helping its European customers in their efforts to cut the embedded greenhouse gas emissions of their products.
The newly opened recycling unit will have an annual capacity to process up to 25,000 tonnes of post-consumer aluminum scrap.
Eivind Kallevik, Executive Vice President of Hydro Aluminium Metal noted that there has been an increasing demand for low-carbon aluminum, especially from the automotive industry. The new cutting-edge technology will help its clients in achieving their climate targets by significantly reducing carbon footprint, he added.
