SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hydro announced investment of NOK 225 million towards upgrading the remaining 120 electrolytic cells at Hydro Husnes. The work on the upgrade project is expected to commence soon and will be completed during the fall of 2025. The proposed upgrades will make the plant one of the most modern and energy efficient primary aluminum production sites in the world.

Hydro had resumed production in the upgraded B line in June 2021, after remaining shut down for almost 12 years. Since then, the company has been looking to upgrade the A line also to the same standard. The investment is expected to deliver increased energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn will result in production of low carbon aluminum.
The Hydro Husnes plant has been witnessing production cuts for the past couple of years, due to economic weakness in the European region. Since September 2022, it has curtailed 80 out of the 200 production cells in the B line.
By upgrading the remaining 120 cells, the company aims to realize the full technological potential of the electrolysis and gear up for the future, said Johan Berg, Head of Hydro's aluminium operations in Norway
