- Established producers remain active at major mines while newer projects in the Lake Victoria Goldfield continue to advance.
MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Tanzania's gold sector is becoming an increasingly important source of export revenue, with earnings from the precious metal rising sharply during the year ending July 2026.
Gold export earnings increased 37.4% to $5.67 billion, according to Bank of Tanzania data. Gold represented 47.4% of the country's goods-export earnings during the period, underscoring the metal's importance to Tanzania's external trade.
The figures place gold well ahead of Tanzania's other major merchandise exports and highlight the country's growing reliance on the mining sector for foreign-exchange earnings.
Lake Zone Remains Tanzania's Mining Center
Mining activity remains heavily concentrated in Tanzania's Lake Zone, particularly the Geita and Shinyanga regions.
The Lake Zone accounted for 67.6% of national mineral recovery during the first quarter of 2026, according to central bank data.
The region includes some of Tanzania's best-established gold operations. AngloGold Ashanti operates the Geita Gold Mine, while Barrick Mining has a major presence through its Bulyanhulu operation in the Shinyanga region.
SCRAPMONSTER EDGE
The most significant number is gold's share of exports. At 47.4% of goods-export earnings, gold is not simply one of Tanzania's leading commodities. It is responsible for nearly half of the country's merchandise export revenue, making production levels, project development and global gold prices increasingly important to Tanzania's external sector.
New Gold Projects Add to Established Production Base
Alongside Tanzania's established producers, newer developers are advancing projects in the Lake Victoria Goldfield.
Lake Victoria Gold, for example, is progressing work at its Imwelo Gold Project in Tanzania's Geita Region as it moves the permitted development toward its next construction phase.
The combination of established producing mines and projects moving through development provides Tanzania with a broader pipeline of potential future production.
That activity is particularly significant given the concentration of mineral recovery in the Lake Zone, where Geita and Shinyanga remain central to the country's gold-mining industry.
Gold's Role in Tanzania's Export Economy Expands
The latest export figures demonstrate how strongly Tanzania's trade performance is now tied to gold.
Gold's $5.67 billion in export earnings represented an increase of more than one-third from the prior-year period. Its 47.4% share of goods exports also means movements in gold production and international pricing can have a substantial effect on overall merchandise-export receipts.
The broader global gold-mining market is also expected to expand over the coming years, although estimates vary considerably by research provider.
The Insight Partners projects the global gold-mining market to increase from $293.03 billion in 2025 to $807.89 billion by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate of 11.93% over its forecast period.
Separately, Mordor Intelligence forecasts global gold-market volume to rise from 5.1 thousand tonnes in 2026 to 7.25 thousand tonnes by 2031, equivalent to a projected compound annual growth rate of 7.30%.
Those forecasts are global projections rather than Tanzania-specific estimates. Tanzania's more immediate indicators are its rising gold-export receipts, the Lake Zone's dominant share of mineral recovery and the continued development of both established and emerging gold operations.
