SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Georgia-Pacific announced its decision to lay off 300 production workers at its Toledo, Oregon mill for a period of one week. The company cited weak market demand for its products as the reason for the temporary layoff. The operations are expected to come to a halt on May 21st, with production set to resume on May 28th. Only very few staff will be retained at the site.
The company spokesperson C.J. Drake said that the decision follows careful evaluation of forecasted demand for containerboards produced by the Toledo mill facility by its leaders and experts at the local and corporate levels. The study concluded that the combined production by the three paper machines at the facility far exceeds the existing as well as short-term projected demand, he noted.

It was a difficult decision to make and the company fully understands the impacts it may have on its employees and the communities in which they live. Further, Drake stated that the company is committed to maintain its readiness to resume production during the temporary closure.
This is not the first Georgia Pacific mill facility to announce layoff. Earlier, the company had announced its decision to lay off around 200 workers on account of closure of its DeQuincy, Louisiana plant.
