Georgia Pacific Declares Shutdown of Crossett Mill Paper Towel Line

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Georgia Pacific announced more layoffs at its Crossett plant. As per the announcement, the company will shut down its Sparkle paper towel line at the plant by either the end of this year or the beginning of the next year. This is feared to affect nearly 25 employees.

According to Jennifer King, Public Relations Manager, some of the equipment at the plant are too old and the company believes that its other mills can produce it in a more economical and effective manner. The employees have already been notified about the shutdown.

Further to shutdown of the paper towel line, the mill will be left with tissue paper operations alone, which in turn will become the mill’s primary focus, King noted. She noted that this will be the last major business change for Crossett plant. The company is committed to make further investments in the plant in future, aimed at upgrading some of its existing old toilet paper machines, she added.

Earlier in June this year, the company had warned that nearly 500 employees are likely to lose their jobs. At that time, it had announced plans to close the bleach board machines, extrusion plant, woodyard, pulp mill and a significant portion of the energy complex by end-2019.

A job and resource fair for the community will be hosted by the Crossett Area Chamber of Commerce September 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Meantime, the mill has no plans to host a separate job fair for the employees affected by the recent shutdown.

The announced closure of the Georgia Pacific particleboard facility in Hope is likely to affect another 100 employees.
