E-Waste Recycling Rate Recorded Notable Surge in Ireland

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Over 5.6 million electrical items were collected for recycling in Ireland during the previous year, said the latest report published by the European Recycling Platform (ERP). A tremendous rise was reported in the volume of large kitchen appliances collected for recycling.

In accordance with ERP data, the overall e-waste recycling rate per person surged higher by 9% during 2020. The volume of electronic waste recycled per person stood at 11.71 kilograms. The volume of large kitchen appliances sent for recycling witnessed 19% surge. The collection spiked in April and May, compared with the same months in 2019. A total of 141,292 washing machines, dishwashers and other bulky items were collected in 2020. It also collected around 61,000 fridges, ERP report said.

A separate survey conducted on behalf of ERP found that the most recycled item was kettle. One out of four adults who participated in the survey said that they disposed of kettle in 2020. Also, one out of five said they recycled a television.

Ossian Smyth, Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform welcomed the change in recycling behaviour during the pandemic period and hoped that it will continue.
