The remaining metal and plastic materials are then treated as reintroduced as secondary raw materials.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): GreenWEEE announced that it has reached a new milestone in recycling flat panel displays. The company’s recycling facility in Buzau City, Romania managed to recycle 150,000 pieces of flat screen equipment within one year of operation. It must be noted that GreenWEEE had opened the recycling line for flat screens in May last year.

The company had invested Eur 500,000 in the recycling line, which has an annual processing capacity of around 2,500 tonnes of LCD, plasma and LED flat panel displays. It is the only such unit in Romania and one among the few in the entire European region operating with a WEEEBALEX license. Along with its other plant located in Campia Turzii, GreenWEEE is a major contributor to Romania’s ambitious e-waste recycling targets.

The flat panel display equipment are said to contain dangerous substances such as beryllium, cadmium, lead and mercury that pose serious risks to human health. GreenWEEE’s treatment process extracts these hazardous materials in a controlled environment. The remaining metal and plastic materials are then treated as reintroduced as secondary raw materials.

Marius Costache, General Manager, GreenWEEE said that the company gives paramount importance to careful and responsible dismantling of flat panel displays, as they contain an array of hazardous materials that pose human health risks.
