Europe's e-scrap recycling sector looks troubled, says EERA

CANTERBURY (Scrap Monster): The European Electronics Recyclers Association (EERA) has stated that the region’s e-scrap recycling sector is presently facing tough times. Updating on the current market scenario, Norbert Zonneveld, General Secretary, EERA noted that many member firms of the Association are struggling hard to survive. He pointed out that two members had applied for bankruptcy during the previous year. The situation continues to remain grin, he said.

According to EERA, the big waste management firms and business affiliated to metal recycling giants have managed to survive during these difficult times. However, the worst affected are the small to medium size businesses. The market condition in the European region currently doesn’t favor these e-scrap recycling firms.

The Association stated that only one-third of Europe’s electronic scrap is recycled properly. The remaining two-thirds are handled by car shredders or by unofficial players. The Association members should be able to handle the two-thirds of the e-waste which equates to nearly 6 million tonnes of electronic waste.

As per results of most recent survey conducted by Big Market Research, the global e-waste management market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 23.5% from 2014 to 2020.
