European Paper Recycling Council Published Monitoring Report for 2019

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European Paper Recycling Council (EPRC) announced publication of its Monitoring Report for the year 2019.

According to the report, nearly 72% of all paper and board consumed in Europe was recycled in 2019. This is just a shy away from the 74% goal set by the region for 2020. However, it shows an improvement from 71.7% in 2018.

The collection of paper totalled 57.5 million tonnes during the year, falling by 2.5% from the prior year. Upon comparison with 2015, the volume of paper and board collected and recycled has dropped by 1.6 million tonnes. The Chinese curbs on imports from third countries led to notable reduction in export demand, which substantially impacted collections.

The consumption of paper and board declined to 79.8 million tonnes in 2019, the report noted. The consumption of case materials recorded marginal decline by 0.6%, whereas the newsprint paper consumption continued to decline, falling by 6.5% from 2018.

The chances of achieving 74% recycling target for 2020 depends on prospects of paper and board consumption, which is likely to be impacted by weak economic situation across nations on account of Covid-19 pandemic. Also, the report anticipates further delay in commissioning of new recycling capacities.
