The pulp production and consumption were down by 6.4% and 4.7% respectively, over the previous year.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) announced release of its latest report that provides key statistics outlining the performance of the European pulp and paper industry during the entire year 2020. The report is based on data compiled from various national associations along with inputs from additional sources such as Eurostat.
The paper and board production by CEPI members totalled 85.2 million tonnes in 2020. This is down by 4.8% when compared to 2019. The European paper and board consumption witnessed marginal decline by 5.3% during the previous year to total 71 million tonnes. The decline is primarily attributed to the slowdown in European economy and restrictions imposed on account of Covid-19 pandemic.
According to CEPI report, paper and board imports stood at 5.2 million tonnes. On the contrary, exports totalled 19.4 million tonnes. The pulp production and consumption were down by 6.4% and 4.7% respectively, over the previous year.
The industry provides nearly 18,000 direct jobs in Europe, said the report.
The direct carbon emissions by the European paper industry registered a decline by 7.1% in 2020. Although this was mainly due to reduced mill activity, the decarbonisation efforts by the industry too contributed in a significant way.
