EMR Metal Recycling to Scrap Decommissioned USS Charles F. Adams

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The USS Charles F. Adams- the U.S. Navy’s first guided missile destroyer will be dismantled and recycled by International Shipbreaking Ltd., part of EMR Metal Recycling, at its Brownsville, Texas facility. The complete demilitarization of the prestigious ship is expected to be completed in 2021. The contract promises that nearly 98% of all of the removed materials are recycled.

Chris Green, Senior Manager, International Shipbreaking Ltd. said that it is a great honor for the company to work on a ship with impressive service to her country. The company has made all preparations to ensure safe towing, dismantling and recycling of the ship. This is one of the many contracts that have been awarded. He reminded that the company has an exciting track record of handling out-of-service military vessels in the most responsible and compliant manner.

The USS Charles F. Adams has served as the flagship for Cold War surveillance of Soviet submarines in the North Atlantic. It has carried out space flight recovery operations as part of NASA’s Project Mercury. In addition, the ship has also taken part in quarantine and surveillance operations as part of the Cuban missile crisis.

Apart from the Brownsville, Texas facility, the company has two more specialized facilities at New Orleans and Amelia, Louisiana.
