Rwanda Unveils New Campaign to Launch E-Waste Collection Points

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Central African country of Rwanda announced the launch of a new countrywide awareness campaign on building a sustainable electronic waste processing system in the country. Accordingly, every district in the country will have an e-waste collection point within the next two months.

The official launch of the campaign was marked with the opening of an e-waste collection centre in Musanze district, which is expected to serve as the central collection point as well as interim e-waste storage facility for electronic waste from the entire district. The launch of similar facilities is scheduled in all other districts of the country, in partnership with Enviroserve Rwanda Green Park.

The campaign aims to create awareness among general public on the impacts of improper disposal of e-waste. Also, it aims to educate informal e-waste handlers to make changes to their way of operation, so that it in line with the country’s e-waste regulations.

Oliver Mbera, General Manager, Enviroserve stated that the project seeks to protect the environment by properly recycling electronic equipment that contain hazardous chemicals which are toxic to the environment. The project is expected to generate hundreds of jobs, by offering training to technicians who currently do not possess any formal university degree, he added.
