Incidentally, electronics recyclers are required to transition to the new certification standard latest by 1st July, 2023.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The attendees at the ISRI 2021 Online Conference shared the implications of R2v3 certification standard by the Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI). Incidentally, electronics recyclers are required to transition to the new certification standard latest by 1st July, 2023.

Rick Sandlin, founder and CEO, Rivervista Partners noted that new R2:2013 certifications could not be issued, effective Jan 1, 2021. All existing R2:2013 certifications could be recertified only until Jan 1, 2022. The expiry of all R2:2013 certifications will be July 1, 2023, after which all recyclers are required to transition to the new certification standard, he added.

Meantime, Kelley Keogh, co-founder of Greeneye Partners LLC stated that R2 facilities are required to document and maintain a data sanitization plan and procedures, in addition to maintaining a written data security policy. In addition, all workers should be offered regular training in order to remain competent on data security policies and procedures.

The transition period will allow facilities to update their operations to conform to the new requirements and provide time for each to be audited. The companies need to be certified only to processes they perform, as detailed in Appendix A to Appendix F.
