SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): British packaging major DS Smith announced investment of 16.7 million euros in German plant expansion. The investment covers automation of internal transport and installation of state-of-the-art corrugators, which in turn will expand and modernize its Arnstadt, Thuringia site.
The company had held symbolic ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction work. The construction works are likely to extend to up to one year. The production is unlikely to be affected during this period, said the company press release. The expansion will strengthen the future viability of the plant, in addition to increasing the quality of products manufactured at the facility.

The investment, in line with the ‘Now and Next’ sustainability strategy, will lead to significant reduction in energy consumption. Furthermore, it will considerably reduce the volume of paper waste generated during the manufacturing process. The new corrugator is expected to save 154 tons of carbon dioxide per ton, when matched with the existing one.
Apart from new corrugators, the investment aims at automation of internal transport by two new automated conveyor systems. Also, the plant will also have a new intermediate storage facility.
