Key Points
- Borouge International plans to add nearly 14,000 tonnes of annual mechanical plastics recycling capacity in Germany and Austria.
- The Niedergebra facility in Germany will add approximately 9,000 tonnes of recycled mixed polyolefins capacity annually.
- The Wildon facility in Austria will increase recycled polyethylene production by up to 5,000 tonnes annually.
- The additional German capacity is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, followed by the Austrian expansion in the fourth quarter of 2027.
- Borouge's Elin Pelin facility in Bulgaria already produces more than 20,000 tonnes of post-consumer recycled polypropylene annually.
MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Borouge International is expanding its mechanical plastics recycling operations in Germany and Austria, with plans to add nearly 14,000 tonnes of annual capacity and increase European supplies of recycled polyolefins.
Germany and Austria Recycling Capacity to Expand
Production at the company's Niedergebra facility in Germany will increase by approximately 9,000 tonnes annually, expanding output of recycled mixed polyolefins (rPO).
The plant processes post-consumer plastic waste into recycled materials used in rigid applications. The additional capacity is scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2027.
At its Wildon facility in Austria, Borouge plans to increase recycled polyethylene (rPE) production by up to 5,000 tonnes annually. The expanded capacity is expected to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2027.
European Recycling Platform Grows
The upgrades come as European manufacturers face growing pressure to incorporate recycled content amid changing consumer preferences, supply-chain requirements and regulatory developments, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
Borouge International's European recycling network also includes its Elin Pelin facility in Bulgaria, which produces more than 20,000 tonnes of post-consumer recycled polypropylene (rPP) annually.
