DS Smith Enters Into New Contract to Boost Efforts to Reduce Carbon Emissions

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith announced that its greener transportation solution has helped the city of Zurich in Switzerland to reduce carbon emissions and meet recycling targets.

The company has entered into a contract with its local logistics partner, BTK Befrachtungs and Transportkontor GmbH, to transport nearly 8,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard recycling (PfR) from Switzerland to its DS Smith Aschaffenburg paper mill in Germany using Liquid Natural Gas (LNG)-powered vehicles, which run on a circular route between Germany and Switzerland.

DS Smith had considered a number of alternative transport solutions for its Zurich recycling contract including rail and electric, but finally chose LNG due to several reasons including cost and environmental advantages.

The move will result in a CO2 saving of 7.83% in comparison with diesel trucks. The annual savings are estimated at 8,687 kg CO2. Incidentally, BTK has already announced its commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by the end of 2022.

Andreas Koll, Head of Logistics in Germany at DS Smith said that the company is delighted to further develop relationship with its long-standing local logistics partner, while helping the City to meet its sustainability targets.
