SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith reported huge success in its fight to replace plastic with sustainable alternatives. The company removed over 313 million pieces of problem plastics over the two-year period from May 2020 to April 2022. The results are a testament of the tremendous outcome of its plastic replacement programme.

DS Smith had collaborated with customers and designers to launch thousands of new innovations in replacement of plastics. By doing so, the company has been able to play a key role in removing the plastic waste even at the design phase. The company’s alternative packaging solutions helped to remove huge volumes of everyday plastic items, said the company press release.
The London-based international packaging company noted that customers’ demand for fibre-based packaging as an alternative to hard-to-recycle plastics witnessed significant jump during this period. A recent survey commissioned by DS Smith showed that nearly 41% of consumers prefer packaging made from alternative renewable sources.
As part of its Now and Next sustainability targets, the company aims to design out 1 billion pieces of problem plastics off supermarket shelves. The company will continue to encourage its consumers and customers to adopt fibre-based alternatives, thus contributing to the efforts to phase out plastics.
