Lidl generates around 350-450 kilograms of cardboard for recycling across its stores in a single day. As part of its sustainability commitments, the company has set out clear goals such as supporting a circular system that captures and retains the valuable resources in packaging, It has been collaborating with DS Smith in testing and trialling innovative closed loop systems.

As part of the program, the empty boxes after unpacking the goods onto shelves are sorted on the shop floor. The cardboard boxes are collected separately in roll cages, which when full is tipped into the store’s baler. The bales arte then transported to the nearest Lidl logistics site, which are then sent to partners including DS Smith Paper. As per rough estimates, 7 truckloads of cardboard for recycling leaves Lidl’s site every day.

DS Smith’s Rouen, Coullons and Kayserberg paper mills receive the bales of cardboard, where they are first checked for moisture and contamination. The impurities are removed by immersing them in a pulper to produce pulp, which in turn are fed into paper making machines.
