Demolition of Liberty Steel Mill Property in Georgetown Begins

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Georgetown leaders say work to demolish the Liberty Steel site is expected to go on five to six days per week.

The process began after the city issued a demolition permit, city spokesperson Cindy Thompson said.

Major Carol Jayroe met with former mill manager Jim Moore, who will lead the demolition project, and others for information on what to expect.

“I am impressed with the upcoming outlined plan for the demolition,” Jayroe said. ”I am especially grateful that the officials with the project will be utilizing local workers and local businesses. Their confidence in our local workforce and businesses comes at a time our community will benefit.”

Crews will take demolition materials off the property by rail and trucks, which is expected to increase traffic in the area.

The goal is to reduce noise and dust pollution as much as possible during the demolition, Thompson said.

Georgetown leaders previously said they want to transform the decades-old mill into a vibrant part of the waterfront with housing and shops, WMBF-TV reported.
