Coca-Cola Launches Paper Bottles to Combat Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The global beverage leader Coca-Cola announced its decision to launch trial paper bottles in Hungary during this summer. The company follows other brands including Carlsberg, Johnnie Walker and L’Oreal which have already been using paper packaging for its liquids.

The paper packaging will be introduced in its fruit drink range Adez. The paper bottles will have a strong paper shell with a thin plastic liner.

Daniela Zahariea, director of Coca-Cola’s technical supply chain and innovation in Europe said that the trial is an important milestone in the company’s efforts to develop a paper bottle solution. The company was highly motivated from expectations by people who wished Coca-Cola to introduce new, innovative and sustainable types of packaging into the market, as replacement for existing plastic packaging.

It must be noted that Coca-Cola, along with PepsiCo and Nestle were recently named by the Break Free From Plastic (BPF) annual audit report as the world’s top plastic polluters. A similar report had blamed the company, along with three others, to be responsible for bulk of plastic pollution in six developing countries, including India.

Industry experts consider paper as better alternative than plastic, as it decomposes faster and is more recyclable.
