The position paper outlines CEPI’s stance on key aspects of the ‘Fit for 55’ package, which pushes EU decarbonisation into higher gear.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has unleashed a position paper that outlines the European pulp and paper industry’s decarbonisation potentials.

According to CEPI, the industry fully supports the EU objective to reach climate neutrality by 2050. The pulp and paper industry in the region has already achieved 29% reduction in carbon emissions when compared with 2005 baseline levels. The constant investments in energy efficiency have contributed to over 12% reduction in primary energy consumption during the period from 2005 to 2018.

The package proposals are expected to promote stable, predictable and effective protection for the sector. Apart from promoting access to affordable climate-neutral energy sources for energy-intensive industries, it also secures funds, incentives and long-term security for investments in climate-neutral technologies. CEPI noted.

Furthermore, the position paper reiterated the industry’s commitment to increase recycling even further to boost the circular economy.
