CEPI Focuses on Carbon Reduction Potentials of Pulp & Paper Industry

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has published a new report titled “2030 Industry Manifesto”, which outlines the carbon reduction potentials of paper industry.

According to CEPI, 2030 is a critical year, on the path to decarbonisation of European economy. New investment projects need to be designed and implemented for the industry to deliver ambitious decarbonisation targets.

The industry has already achieved 29% reduction of carbon emissions from 2005 till date. The direct emissions from the sector accounts for only less than 0.7% of the total EU greenhouse gas emissions, making it an industry leader. The pulp and paper industry could well exceed the ambitious carbon reduction targets set by it, with substantial support from the EU, noted CEPI.

The industry prevents the use of fossil materials and reduces carbon dioxide emissions in other sectors by replacing fossil-based products with forest-based products. The production processes employed by the industry have almost zero process emissions.

CEPI called for necessary regulatory support in incentivizing the forest-based circular economy and enhancing sustainable forest management. Furthermore, it urged the regional administration to boost investments so as to ensure a cost-competitive carbon neutral energy supply.
