Century Aluminum Company Welcomed Decision to Triple Chinese Aluminum Tariffs

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Century Aluminum Company welcomed decision made by the Biden administration to triple the existing tariffs on Chinese aluminum imports. It provides a clear and strong response to unfair trade policies by the Asian country and will help address the aluminum overcapacity issues, the company noted.

Attending the event held at the White House to announce the move, Jesse Gary, President and Chief Executive Officer, Century Aluminum Company praised the action, saying that it is essentially critical for the U.S. aluminum industry. The move demonstrates the current administration’s commitment to U.S. primary aluminum production, he added.

Gary thanked the Biden administration for announcing a grant of $500 million in support of its planned greenfield smelter facility, which is expected to double the domestic production capacity. The proposed facility, the first new smelter in the U.S. in 45 years, would be the greenest in the entire world, he said.

Gary highlighted the crucial role played by aluminum, saying that it is a key component of modern economy and critical to various defense applications. The unfair trade of aluminum products has been detrimental to the industry and its workers. The decision to triple the tariffs would bring in new investments, create jobs and create a level-playing field for the domestic aluminum manufacturers in the country.
