Century Aluminum Announced Expansion of Casthouse at Iceland Smelter

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Century Aluminum Company announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary has commenced construction of a new casthouse at its Grundartangi, Iceland smelter. As per the announcement, Norðurál Grundartangi ehf will construct a new low-carbon billet casthouse.

The new casthouse will be built at an investment of around $120 million and is expected to generate nearly 90 jobs in the region. The casthouse is expected to become operational in the initial quarter of 2024. It will have a capacity of 150,000 tonnes of billet production. Furthermore, it will boost the production capacity of primary foundry alloys from current level of 60,000 tonnes per annum to 120,000 tonnes per annum, the company press release said.

The billets and foundry products from the casthouse will help the company meet the growing demand for low-carbon aluminium products from customers in the European region.

Jesse Gary, President and Chief Executive Officer noted that the casthouse will utilize renewable electricity to process aluminium into billets, thus creating more valuable product by lowering the carbon footprint of aluminium production throughout the region. The project will be fully funded with Icelandic green financing from  Arion Bank, he added.
