SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Over the past few months, BoMET Polymer Solutions’ Brantford, Ontario facility has reported steady rise in processing volume of scrap plastics. The project, first announced in 2018, had to face multiple hurdles including modification to equipment before installation. It sources e-plastics from e-waste recycling firms and generates pellets and regrinds that are then supplied to product manufacturers.
The facility handles various categories of e-plastic resins, whose exports have been impacted by the new regulations that have come into effect with the recent changes to the Basel Convention. The scrap plastic cargoes that contain resins including e-plastic resins need to be notified prior to exports. Also, new restrictions prevent U.S. from exporting them to certain countries. Incidentally, the entire EU region has imposed ban on export of scrap plastic.

The BoMET facility now offers an outlet for e-plastics. The plant comprises eight float-sink tanks to sort e-plastics, an electrostatic separation line, an optical sorter and two pelletizing lines. It plans to add a shredding system to handle baled-plastics from CRT devices as well as a near-infrared system to sort grey and white plastics. Also, it has entered into partnerships with leading market players including Canadian Quantum Lifecycle Partners and Chinese Shanghai Re-Mall.
